A Fine Sunday Morning
I won’t belabor the point that Athens’ first triathlon since 1995 ( I did it twiice, sponsored by the UGA Intramurals dept) was a big hit. We got a break from the heat, the race came off without a hitch with loads of volunteers and there were more spectators than I have ever seen for a multisport event.
I needed a sprint and a good race at this point in the year, makes training in the heat seem worthwhile. After a very uninspired bike leg in Elberton, I had a surprising performance on a relatively tough course.
The swim was too short for me to gain much time, so the strong bike was key to a good finish. I knew I had a good day, but was shocked to finish 7th overall. More importantly, my sons were shocked, surprised and elated. At 12, they get more difficult to impress every year. Ended up sharing the podium (odd- a real podium ) with 2 teammates but the award paled in comparison to the good feeling of having a good race with my wife and kids there to enjoy it with me.
The good times continue this week as the hospital is all abuzz with talk of the triathlon. As you might imagine, most of the folks at ARMC don’t understand the sport, but since the Cancer Foundation was the beneficiary, lots of healthcare folks got involved.
I thought they would do well to get 300 racers. After this race, I think they could fill 600 by March of 2011 for an August race.
Thanks to all my teammates and friends for the prerace, postrace and during the race support. Now we can focus on Augusta.
